Pictured above is John Mason, father of the late H. J. Mason, who served the County as its Sheriff for five terms.
John Mason came to Hunt County about 1850. He is the grandfather of George M. Dennis, former publisher of the Greenville Resident and for the past several years operator of the New Country Hotel, just this side of Mt. Pleasant.
For years John Mason operated a hotel on the present site of the Montgomery Ward building, southwest corner of the public square. He died in 1893, at the age of 72 years.
From their early boyhood he reared his grandsons, George and John Dennis. John Dennis was only two years of age when he came to live with his grandfather.
He played a prominent part in the affairs of the village of Greenville in his early, struggling days-before there was a railroad here.
